Someone needs to take Tucker Carlson’s bowtie away. Or shove it in his mouth. Or choke him with it. Something. NPR and PBS seem to be as tired of clichéd Black History Month tributes as I am. Not only did we have the Percy Julian features last week, but there was also a lot of coverage for the Billy Strayhorn documentary “Lush Life”. I’m excessively excited right now! I’ll tell you why. For one of the Our Black History posts I was going to do something about my mom who died in 1999. I loved my mom a lot and I miss her every day, so I felt it would be good to do something [...] No new content this weekend, sorry. That’s because I want to draw some attention to stuff already posted on the blog that I think deserves some more attention and discussion. Comments, mostly, and some posts. Also, this is an Open Thread, say what you want to me! I can take it. My maternal grandmother’s grandparents were George Dallas Finley and Julia Larkin Finley. They lived and died in Sumpter County, Alabama, and are the main nexus of the Finley/Larkin clan. The Finleys, Larkins, and Tidmores (my grandfather’s people) were three of the main black families in Sumpter County. Not only because they were [...] Like I said last week, it’s kind of fun when I’m linked to as an authority on ‘black stuff’ like gratuitous hair petting and whatnot. But all this fame comes at a price. I might also be linked to by a bunch of unabashedly racist bastards like the folks on The Phora Forum. I’ve been thinking about black leaders and leadership, not least because of Obama, but also due to other things. NPR’s News and Notes has a great interview with actor Ruben Santiago-Hudson on his role in the Nova documentary Forgotten Genius about the life of Percy Julian. My maternal grandomther’s grandfather was a preacher named George Dallas Finley. A few years ago I asked some of my relatives to tell me about him and I ended up with a lot of amazing stories about the whole family.
