Harassment Post Coming Monday

I’m collecting some more data.  This has turned into quite a deep post.

Meanwhile, I am amused at the # of hits I continue to get.  And now from encyclopedia dramatica!  Keep linking to me, guys!  I’ve been trying to convince advertisers to buy space on my site.  These starts are going to guarantee it!  hee :)

Oh, and keep commenting.  Because this weekend I’m going to start publicly posting IP addresses, and a friend of mine has already found the real name and workplace of one of you.  Just sayin’.

Uh oh, boys. Looks like you better start watching your asses. Because your 4chan and SA shit? MIGHT LEAVE YOU UNEMPLOYED!

Hahaha…when internet meets real life. It BECOMES serious business when your unimpressed supervisor is staring at you and telling you that you’re terminated from their company.

  2. noir says:

Hey, I never commented before, but… workplace? Real name? That is what I wanted to see!

I will love the reaction to the ‘niggers,’ and ‘they deserved to be raped’ comments.

  3. noir says:

Aww, and look at them! They are all trying to make themselves look cool at that forum! They are so cute.

If just throwing some teenage jokes doesn’t make you a man…

  4. A. says:

    They deserve to be raped?

Wow, that’s some sexual frustration from them if I’ve ever heard it…

  5. Juan says:

Now that’s rather diabolically interesting of you. Turning those little tools into… well, tools.

I think you deserve more of an evil laughter than ‘hee’ for that one. *chuckles*

  6. Red says:

I love this site. I have been part of other forums and seen websites attacked by these same wankers who have nothing better to do, nothing better to BE than someone who is threatened by the prospect of equality and reacts like a Giant Baby having a hissyfit.

I stand behind you, or in front of you if needed.

  7. london says:

    you are awesome abw..
    keep on hitting them..
the harder they come.. the harder they are surely to fall…

  8. richard says:

my next post is gonna be about harassment on my blog too, feelin the synchronicity…. and 11,000 hits in one day? dayum… my 30 hits a day can wait a minit till i get any sponsorship. but no doubt, your site is linked from mine, no worries

one question… what happened to the Carnival Of Allies tho?

  9. Eric Stoller says:

Be careful, it’s easy to become a web stats addict ;-)

I’ve been using Statcounter stats for quite a while now and I’ve labeled hundreds of visitors based on their comments/IP addresses.

  10. Radfem says:

    You too? LOL.

Even though I disabled comments, I still have some nasties dropping by once or twice a day. The sheer endurance of remaining on the site this long kind of narrows down the pool of suspects a lot.

The only time I ever posted an IP address which showed up on a header of an harassing email I received, I received an apology email about five days later.

The IP address? City Hall. I figured they found this person and had them send it to get me off of their case. Officially, I got a really condescending email from the IT person at the ‘Hall.

ABW, looking forward to your posting.

  11. Quietus says:

I just made a large comment on the previous post, but I will repeat myself again here, because I really do believe you are making a huge mistake.

Do not start posting peoples real world information. It really will not go well for you. That’s a warning from a concerned bystander who knows a fair deal about anonymous, not a threat. The last person who tried posting names and telephone numbers of anonymous people ended up with every single iota of information about him, including education, medical and criminal records, being crossposted to multiple forums accompanied by a google earth picture of his house with a target on it. Do not provoke these guys to play hardball. Anonymous has taken down the websites of multi-million dollar global organisations and driven individuals into bankruptcy. They’re immature little dicks, so treat them as such and ignore them. That really is the best thing you can do, I’m serious here.

  12. the angry black woman says:

I hadn’t planned to go beyond posting IP addresses, actually. Anything gleaned from those is likely to be handled privately. I’m not an asshole or anything, I wouldn’t post anyone’s real world info on the web. What happens with it privately is another matter.

I don’t know how I feel about the whole Ignore Them thing. I mean, how how is giving them the power to harass a good thing? maybe what it would take to combat them is a bunch of people who don’t have anything else to do but look up stuff and track things down. Then again, doing all that would make me just as much of a loser as them. seriously, who has such little life that this is what they choose to do?

Also, Richard: carnival coming. I have to sort thought almost a hundred entries :)

  13. Bq says:

Ooh, looking forward to that post. I’ve thought about blogging, but I don’t think I could handle the comment barrage, especially after considering the whole BlackAmazon thing. I think I might eventually, but I haven’t figured out what to do yet about hate speech. I already read that crap weekly on blogs and news articles and other internet forums.

  14. Bq says:

Lol, I also can’t believe 15 trolls is not that many at this point (technically, out of 11,000, it isn’t, but you know what I mean). You’re awesome.

A lot of blogger platforms allow comment moderation so only comments that are approved get posted, though sometimes reading them is hard and some trolls or harassers don’t care if they don’t get posted, they just want to get under your skin. Or disable comments either all the time or some of the time if you need a break. The downside is that without comments on, it’s hard to have discussions!

You can always try blogging first and not decide what to do about comments in the beginning too.

  16. Radfem says:

And if you decide to have comments, watch how other bloggers handle them. Or maybe ask them to get some tips.

  17. Mighty Ponygirl says:

abw — would you kindly shoot me a quick email before you start posting IP addresses?

  18. tigtog says:

wordpress.com doesn’t allow webads, though. They don’t worry about things like the link to your merch store, or if people put up links to their ebay or etsy stores, but any webads that require javascript to enable sensitivity to keywords? Nope. WP.com has disabled javascript installing by free accountholders – can’t be done. If they ever do decide to allow some limited webads like adsense etc it will be a paid upgrade.

I wish you luck with dealing with the harassers, and I can totally understand why you want to, but take care of yourself.

  19. Meep says:

I second the ignoring suggestion.. as much as it would seem like a good idea, some of these people are serious black-hat hackers who will try to screw you over. WordPress is not invulnerable to hacking, so be careful. I wouldn’t want to see a great blog go down because of more immaturity.

You’re thinking of the man who posted an ad on craigslist claiming to be a young woman who wanted to have no-limits rough sex with lots of men? And a lot of men contacted the fake ad with their real names, addresses, phone numbers, and in some instances workplaces… and this guy then took the information they’d sent him and posted it in full on his blog?

And you think that situation is in any way comparable to the owner of a blog taking the IP addresses of trolls posting nasty crap on her blog, finding out who they belong to, and posting that information?

Quietus, you are out of your mind…

  21. Quietus says:

Nope, I’m thinking of Hal Turner. Apart from the fact that targeting a white supremacist clearly indicates anonymous has no developed racial agenda, the details of what happened to Turner very clearly demonstrate just how efficiently anonymous can fuck up your life. ABW might not attract such ott assaults if she did not post the details if minors as Turner did (which I believe she would not do, at least not deliberately) but anonymous could probably take down this site. There is nothing to be gained from trying to ‘take these people on’, because there is no way you can win. Really, just moderating the incoming posts and studiously ignoring the rest is probably the best thing you can do.

  22. richard says:

really looking forward to this new post, just got my first white supremacist troll. now i feel like a real blogger :)

and thanks for the update on the Carnival Of Allies ABW! :)

  23. Eric Stoller says:

Ugh… I’ve been linked from the SF site again :(

Although, this time they gave me a great name if I ever want to start a rock band: Leftwing Fever Swamp.

  24. mythusmage says:

    ABW,

If the hits stay high I recommend switching to a pay host. I’m partial to Total Choice Hosting myself, but which you go with is your decision. Yes, they do offer WordPress via Fantastico Deluxe and cPanel.

Since you are on WordPress.com I recommend looking into the plugins WP.c provides.. Anti-spam, commenting, that sort of thing. You may find one called Ban, which lets you block specific IPs and host names.

I do have one contrary thing to say about you. You’re not angry, you’re justifiably ticked off.

  25. mythusmage says:

(Interesting, I provide a link to my hosting provider and it gets junked. i remove the link and the host’s name gets through. Somebody’s spam filter needs a talking to.)

  26. Radfem says:

I have a sore loser who backed the wrong candidate in this week’s local election ranting on some internet site about how I have some sexual fascination with the politician and how creepy it is that I’ve blogged so much on him during the past several months (but doesn’t mention that there was an election cycle taking place during that time period).

Not to mention, I had a harassing comment a while back which sounded exactly like the politician himself. I wish the trolls at least could go on vacation once in a while!

But it’s a reminder, albeit a not nice at all one and not always much consolation, that it’s important to keep at it. Because for one thing, for all the trolls, there are many others out there who do get something positive out of blogs.
