“The worst thing about that kind of prejudice… is that…

“The worst thing about that kind of prejudice… is that while you feel hurt and angry and all the rest of it, it feeds your self-doubt. You start thinking, perhaps I am not good enough.”

-Nina Simone

Yes. And, on top of that, I sometimes feel that I can’t talk about that self-doubt because it will make me look weak to those attempting to create it, shatter the perception that I’m strong enough to take it, and make the people who look to me as an example think less of me. I know this is all in my head. And yet.

Oh boy! I completely understand. Is it something we are taught maybe? That if you cry, say sorry, doubt yourself, admit failure, that somehow you’re not strong?

And yet we’ve heard the phrase, “Real Men Cry”. I wonder what real women do.

Thank you for this. I have been feeling depressed off and on (seemingly randomly) for this very reason. too many people prefer to tell me to look on the bright side, ignore your oppression, rather than validate that it’s okay to have feelings. if i only looked on the bright side of things, i would have remained in lots of abusive situations throughout my life. my anger and depression serve a purpose.
