Boost the signal: New fiction by Sam Delaney, Nalo Hopkinson’s Skin Folk to be made into film, needs funding

HBO might be doing an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods

Also, new Sam Delaney (watch out for some comments). Pity his book is coming out after this years Wiscon, I’d love to see it discussed on that panel that talks about how class is addressed in sci-fi and speculative fic. (Also re: speculative fic and class:Big Machine by Victor La Salle.) Plus, Akata Witch. And let me take a moment to be irritable. May I point out that Africa is a fucking CONTINENT. With at least 50 nations and a HELL of a lot of ethnic groups with a WIDE variety of responses to magic and folklore. Nobody says “The European Harry Potter” because Europe is a varied and vast place and bunching together the entire continent would produce a vague idea that elides a whole lot of the cultural nuances between, say England and Russia. So why the “African Harry Potter” descriptor? What, people living in the CONTINENT of Africa aren’t worth distinguishing one from another? Isn’t it past time for us to STOP treating Africa as a country, lumping everyone together in some indeterminate vague soup and thus completely erasing a ton of stuff? If you MUST compare it to Harry Potter, then call it the African- American/Nigerian Harry Potter.

on a more exciting note: Nalo Hopkinson’s Skin Folk is getting made into a movie:
