Joe Six Pack

Palin goes on and on about Joe Six Pack, McCain is all about Joe the Plumber.  These mythical men are supposed to represent Real Americans and all that.  Yeah.

I haven’t bene paying much attention to the coverage, so maybe one of you can tell me: has no one commented on the fact that this mythical Real American is always some guy?  No one is talking about Jane Winebox, as far as I know.  (Thanks Jon Stewart!)

Seriously, how come the name that represents us all can’t be a woman’s name?

I already know the answer to this, obviously.  I just needed to say it out loud.

Hockey mom? Soccer mom? You know, women as defined by their most important quality: the ability to produce more Joe Sixpacks.

  2. Erica says:

But we’re supposed to just vote to what our husband Joe tells us to vote, aren’t we? :P

  3. Bree says:

America: it’s all about beer and plumbing. I think that should be the new slogan of the Republican party.

  4. Micah says:

It’d be nice if it were more gender neutral, like Sam Six Pack, but again, I kind of like the Joe SixPack idea. Kind of enforces the notion that Republicans are a bunch of drunks.

  5. Noticed says:

Especially since women voters have outnumbered men in every election since 1964. So why wouldn’t they want to at least pretend they’re talking to us?

  6. Brandon says:

Right, if I was in office, I’d make a much more urbane and savvy decision and market statements not to Joe Sixer but rather to Eve-ManHunter. How foolish of them considering the voting bloc of women is larger than that of men right? Cater to the majority.

I was irritated about this very thing as well. I haven’t seen any of the mainstream media question their use of Joe to appeal to the populace. It really annoyed me in the debate last week that they were spending so much time on Joe.

A pundit who was on Keith Olbermann the other night mentioned how, in the Republican world, the archetypal American is always some working class white guy. Because we all know, they have it hardest.

All WHITE guys, unless I’m mistaken.

(white guys: the new minority voter everyone is angling for? By reassuring them that they IS the still classic All-American Real Dude. When in fact the white guys all know deep down they’re just a bunch of loser has-beens, and single, business-owning, Hispanic moms with college degrees are the up-and-coming New Real Americans.

Anyway, that’s the spin I’m putting on it to keep myself from going insane with depression.)

That is what sickens me whenever someone brings up (*cough*Hillary, McCain, and Palin*cough) the notion of hard-working Americans. Now, they’ve gone a step further and put a face to that racist meme. It’s as if to say that people of color aren’t American, they don’t represent the average American and of course, they are lazy.

Now, they’ve found out that Joe the Plumber is not actually a plumber, has not paid his taxes and doesn’t have a license. But they still have given this jerk center stage and laud him as an American hero.

That’s why the American Dream is dead.

“When in fact the white guys all know deep down they’re just a bunch of loser has-beens”

Isn’t this the racism & sexism that we’re supposed to be avoiding, yet you are espousing? I mean, replace “white guys” with “black women” and re-read that sentence.
